Two police officers and a taxi driver were treated in hospital for minor injuries after a patrol car and a taxi crashed in Washington.

Emergency services were called to the scene on A1231, near Peel Retail Park at Barmston, on Wednesday night.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “At 10.40pm yesterday, police responded to a collision on the A1231 in Washington involving a police car and a taxi.

“The two officers in the police vehicle and the taxi driver attended hospital as a precaution for treatment to minor injuries and have since been discharged. Inquiries are ongoing.”

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that it transported one person to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
