NEWCASTLE United fans travelling to West Ham faced major travel disruption today after part of the A1 was closed.

A six-mile stretch of the motorway was closed at Catterick after North Yorkshire Police received a report at 3am of an explosion in the Catterick area.

Both slip roads to Catterick have been closed, diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Police said it is a “precautionary measure” while they conduct inquiries.

On its Twitter feed, the force said Catterick village is “heavily congested” due to the A1 closure.

The A1 runs adjacent to Marne Barracks - formerly RAF Catterick - and it is expected to be closed until about 3pm.

Among those affected by the closure are Newcastle fans heading to London by car or coach for their game at West Ham.

Newcastle United has already said they will have notified West Ham officials that supporters travelling by road will be delayed.

Northumbria Police are contacting the main coach operators to ascertain how many fans are delayed en route.
