A man who died after a collision in South Shields on Saturday night has been named

Vincent Gibson, 50, was struck in Whiteleas Way, South Shields, at about 10.30pm on Saturday and later died.

Northumbria Police said its vehicle had been responding to a call in which it was considered “life was at risk”.

A spokesman offered the force’s condolences to the family of Mr Gibson, who lived in South Shields.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed of the crash.

The roof of the police car had to be cut off to free two officers involved in the crash. Their injuries were not thought to be serious, police said.

South Tyneside Area Commander Ch Supt Ian Dawes said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the deceased’s family at this very difficult time.

“This is a tragic incident and we are doing all we can to support the family of the deceased and the wider community in the area.

“Extra officers are out in the Whiteleas Way on patrol today to speak to residents and offer any support that is needed.

“We are also supporting the officers involved in the collision who have been understandably left shaken by what has happened.”
