DRIVERS had to endure rush-hour hold-ups on the A19 this morning after a car overturned and blocked a lane of the northbound carriageway.

The accident happened at 7.05am, around 400 metres north of Testo’s roundabout on the northbound carriageway, when it is believed the driver lost control of the Vauxhall Vectra and struck the embankment.

It is thought he escaped serious injury and was helped out of the vehicle by passers-by.

He was checked over by paramedics and taken to hospital by ambulance for a further assessment and was also spoken to by police called to the scene.

Northumbria Police said the inside lane remained blocked ahead of a recovery truck’s arrival, with traffic able to pass through the second lane.

A spokesman added most drivers had taken other routes as a diversion to avoid the area.
