Drivers are being reminded that they could face delays on the A19 around Sunderland for the next month.
Highways England, which oversees the road, is resurfacing the northbound carriageway between the A1231 Hylton Bridge and the A183 Chester Road Interchange.
Sunderland City Council is working on the A1231, A690 and A183 junctions, resurfacing them and installing more high-tech signalling.
Works are programmed for four weeks from Monday, Seoptember 7, before the risk of poorer weather increases.
Roads chiefs say the improvements are designed to help traffic entering and exiting the A19 corridor and support further economic growth, and essential maintenance
Works will see some overnight closures and diversions being put in place.
Coun Michael Mordey, the city council’s portfolio holder for city services, said: “What has happened is that wet conditions have delayed some of the summer holiday re-surfacing on the A19 and works at the junctions.”
“There is an increased risk of some delays because of re-surfacing stretches on the main A19 network and the council starting its work at the three junctions.
“While the city council and Highways England both apologise for any delays, we would both remind drivers to be patient and bear with us while these final improvements are completed.”
The council’s junction works include re-surfacing and re-marking improvements.
Highways England will be replacing 250m of worn surface on the A19 and replacing five expansion joints on Hylton Bridge.
Highways England project manager Phil Leng said: “We now expect work will be completed later this month rather than August, as originally planned, due to heavy rainfall.
“We are working with Sunderland City Council to keep traffic flowing while the work is carried out and would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
“When complete, this project will provide drivers with safer and smoother journeys along this stretch of the A19 in Sunderland.”
