A council has said sorry to motorists who got caught up in morning jams after a major set of traffic lights failed.
Drivers using the A19 and A690 roundabout in Sunderland were hit by delays after the lights were out until after 9am today.
Tailbacks went as far north as Nissan on the A19.
Portfolio Holder for City Services, Councillor Michael Mordey, said: “The traffic lights are switched off overnight during the road re-surfacing programme along this stretch of road, and switched on again in the morning.
“There was a temporary fault this morning which was quickly identified and addressed by our engineers.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists, and thank them again for their patience while work continues to improve long-term traffic flow along this busy part of the city’s road network.”
