Readers have been having their say on Sunderland City Council's decision to extend the enforcement hours of the city's traffic wardens.

This change will see the option of extra enforcement patrols up until 10pm.

In an online poll, 80% of Echo readers answered "no" to the question: "Do you think enforcement hours need to be extended?"

He said: “Haway the wardens! Slap a ticket on these lazy drivers who can’t be bothered to walk 50 yards - disabled people have their badges.

“I own a car and can’t see a problem a part from inconsiderate parking.”

Tom Parkin added: “The people who receive parking tickets know they are breaking the traffic regulations for that area.

“Responsible motorists have nothing to fear it is just antisocial and irresponsible motorists who will get fined.”

David Purvis said: “This might be a radical idea, but if you park where you’re allowed to when you’re allowed to - you won’t get a ticket.

“If you park where you shouldn’t - you will.”

But some see parking issues as one cause of concern which is holding back the city.

Pamela Jones Quinn said: “It’s a ghost town as it is.

“Here in High Street West, we’re hounded with traffic wardens.

“No wonder people go to the Galleries, Metrocentre etc.”

Mark Bain wrote: “Just a way of getting more money out of motorists, not to mention that I for one don’t see why we should pay only to give business in the area, paying twice over and they wonder why online is favoured for shopping.

“Oh well I just won’t go to Sunderland anymore, Newcastle is far more accessible.”

Philip Lee Dodsworth said: “This sounds like another ‘not so well’ thought out idea.

“Most of the car park and on street parking regulations finish at 6pm, so a part from yellow line offences what are they going to do.”

June Wintrip added: “Sunderland Council are only going to drive people away from Sunderland when they should be encouraging them.”
