A transport company is proud to be involved in this year’s search for the best in business.

Stagecoach North East is one of the fantastic sponsors of the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Business Awards.

The travel choices we all make every day affect our planet. Greener, smarter travel on trains and buses is generally recognised as an important part of the solution to the global challenge of climate change

Bosses told how the firm was committed to the future, especially to an environmentally friendly future.

A spokesman said: “The travel choices we all make every day affect our planet. Greener, smarter travel on trains and buses is generally recognised as an important part of the solution to the global challenge of climate change.

“As a major transport provider in the UK, Stagecoach is also committed to making its own businesses as sustainable as possible. This commitment makes them ideal sponsors of the Green Champion Award.”

The company’s five-year Sustainability Strategy has helped them achieve their environmental goals 12 months ahead of schedule. They cut the carbon intensity of their businesses in the UK and North America by 30 % in the past five years.

They have also been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard for global operations.

New types of fuels and fuel additives are being tested across the UK, with 40 gas buses in Sunderland and all other Stagecoach buses in the North East running on B30 diesel, which blends 30 per cent biodiesel with normal diesel, reducing harmful exhaust emissions.

And staff at the depots are encouraged to reduce, reuse, recycle and even cycle, with hundreds of employees signed up to the company’s cycle to work scheme.
