It’s that time again - entries for Sunderland’s Boxing Day Dip are open.

Sunderland Lions Club, which organises the annual event at Seaburn, is hoping to make 2016 a record-breaking year.

“We have already received some 300 entries, so come on everyone, let’s make it a record number this year,” said spokeswoman Anne Fielding.

“It will be the 42nd Dip and we are looking forward to another successful event.”

The Lions Club takes 20 per cent of sponsorship raised from the event, which it uses to fund its own good causes such as the annual Christmas Wish campaign - almost £11,000 has been distributed across the city and further afield through Lions International, then passes on the remainder to Dippers’ chosen charities.

“Last year we had approximately 750 dippers who raised a magnificent £44,000,” said Anne.

Every year the standard of fancy dress is amazing and a sight to behold on Boxing Day and we encourage the people of Sunderland to come along and give the dippers all the support they can.

The Lions Club is also on the lookout for help with running the event: “Actually organising the Dip is a lot of hard work which begins in August and the Lions Club of Sunderland is always looking out for new members to come along and join in the fun and fellowship of being a Lion,” said Anne.

“We work hard and we also play hard. If this sounds like the kind of experience you are looking for please make yourselves known and join us.

“Come along, have fun and enjoy helping those less fortunate than yourselves. It is a good feeling.”

All dippers must be registered and a registration form can be found on the Lions Club website at www.sunderlandlionsuk.org. Dippers can also call 0191 522 5305.

Dippers should remember that with so many people involved in the event, all the rules in the Dip booklet which they will receive should be read and carefully followed.

Registration closes on Monday, December 12 to allow time for the organisation of the event and compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
