Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash in which a driver ran off and left his three passengers trapped.
The three were passengers in a Renault Clio which hit a tree in Craigavon Road, Hylton Castle, around 5.30am.
A crew from Sunderland Central fire station removed the doors and roof of the car and released the men.
They were placed on spinal boards with the assistance of paramedics and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Police were called to the estate after a number of reports of a vehicle driving dangerously, including that it had collided with another vehicle.
Detectives are particularly keen to speak to the driver of a taxi who told officers where the crashed car was. It is not believed the taxi driver was involved in the accident.
Three men were taken to hospital, one with injuries not believed to be life threatening and the other two men with suspected minor injuries. The alleged driver of the crashed vehicle was detained by police and is presently helping them with enquiries.
