Rebecca Learoyd, 19, and Anne Peachey, 60, were the respective drivers of a Fiat 500 and Citroen Xsara which collided on Front Street in the village just after 6pm on Sunday.
The front seat passenger in the Fiat, 19-year-old Megan Robinson, of Thornley, suffered major injuries and remained in a critical condition in Newcastle’s RVI. However, she died in hospital yesterday lunchtime without ever regaining consciousness.
Post-mortem examinations will be held later in the week to determine a formal cause of death for all three women.
