POLICE patrols are being stepped up in a bid to stop potentially deadly cable thefts.
The action follows an increase in the theft of overhead electricity lines in County Durham. Peterlee has been highlighted as one of the areas hit by the thieves.
Sergeant Dave Lyall, of Durham Constabulary, said: “This is clearly a very dangerous and stupid practice for what are likely to be relatively small sums of money. There is no guarantee the power will be cut and the offenders run a very real risk of serious injury or death.”
Police are appealing for members of the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity around overhead electricity cables.
Anyone with information is asked to ring Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
