The Supremes' Mary Wilson brings her memories to the North East
The fashion, fame and fortune of original girl group The Supremes is explored at a stunning exhibition, launched by founder member Mary Wilson this week. MARISSA CARRUTHERS takes a look at what will be hanging on the walls.
Stunning costumes, stacks of music and a chance to chat with one of the divas behind it all is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
But it is one that Wearsiders can be part of at Gateshead's Shipley Gallery tonight (October 22).
The exhibition features more than 50 costumes, charting the changing image of the chart-toppers from their dresses in the early days as The Primettes to the glamorous Hollywood designs worn at the height of their fame.
The Story of The Supremes from the Mary Wilson Collection will also include costumes worn by the original Supremes – Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, as well as by the 70s Supremes, examining how the group was styled by Berry Gordy and his Motown pals.
The Supremes recorded 12 U.S. number one hits between 1964 and 1969, including an unprecedented five consecutive chart-toppers.
Set against the backdrop of the rise of Motown Records and of the American civil rights movement, the exhibition explores the inspirational role The Supremes played in changing racial perceptions and their influence on today's performers.
Drawing from the collection of Mary Wilson, the display will feature the group's music, album covers and archive performance footage as well as new video interviews with Wilson and Maxine Powell, Motown's in-house artist development director.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a glamorous series of events celebrating the music and fashion made famous by Motown and The Supremes.
And founder member Mary will be on hand tonight and Saturday to help the exhibition get into full swing.
Tonight, Smooth Radio's Paul Wappat will host In Conversation with Mary Wilson at Gateshead Old Town Hall.
He will be chatting to Mary about her experiences in The Supremes as well as exploring the stories behind all the sequins and the songs.

On Saturday Mary will entertain a small audience in the intimate surroundings of the Shipley Art Gallery, surrounded by the exhibition of her famous gowns.
An Audience with Mary Wilson will also give fans the chance to meet Mary and pose their own questions to the star.

"These events will offer a chance for true Motown fans to hear the stories behind the music they love and experience the glamour of the exhibition."
The Story of The Supremes from the Mary Wilson Collection will be on display at the Shipley Art Gallery from Saturday to January, 24. Entry is free.
