The Rattler
Sea Road, South Shields
SITTING supping a chilled glass of wine while admiring the views of the coast, I felt as if I was a million miles away.
This is the beauty of the newly-refurbished Rattler, in Sea Road, South Shields.
The pub is nestled on the shoreline, and relaxing on the decking area at the back, you could be fooled into thinking you were on holiday.
But the two-tier decking area – which has an outside bar feature – is not the only highlight.
Inside, the decor is synonymous with a French boudoir, with a chaise longue, and Chateau-style furniture, such as the floor lamps and mirrors that hang from the ceiling.
The bar features two menus, with daytime dishes such as simple sandwiches served with home-made, chunky chips, and evening cuisine with everything from steak and fish to pizza and pasta.
Feeling peckish, I settled on the home-made lasagne – layers of fresh pasta with bolognaise, mozzarella and bchamel sauce.
My partner opted for the 10oz rump steak served with salad and chips, and dressed in peppercorn and brandy sauce.
The service we received was fantastic and the open plan kitchen and eating area mean you can watch the chef at work – and the smells that drift out really help to work up your appetite.
Serving quality food that's well presented is top of the chef's list, and each of the dishes were delicious (of course I had to try some of my partner's, it would have been rude not to!).
While we enjoyed our food in the comfort of the restaurant, the meals can be ordered to eat outside and breakfast by the beach (for under 5) is served daily from 9am.
Breakfast diners will receive a loyalty card and once they have collected four stamps they will get a free, full English breakfast including a tea or coffee.
With drinks included, our bill came to 23.
Every day The Rattler has a happy hour, from Sunday to Wednesday, from 5pm onwards (service finishes at 10.30pm) where customers can select any pizza or pasta dish for just 4.95. On Thursday to Saturday happy runs from 5pm to 6.30pm.
Drinks are reasonably priced, although you will find they're a little more expensive than bars in the town centre – but the beautiful surroundings and gorgeous views are worth the extra cost.
A pint of fosters is 2.95, Becks, 3.05, and a pint of Woodpecker or Strongbow is 3. A bottle of house wine costs 9.95 and other popular drinks at The Rattler are Crabbie's alcoholic ginger beer, 3.70, Tiger beer, 3, Peroni, 3, and all cocktails are 3.50.
The Rattler is also an exclusive seller of Christian Audigier wine, priced at 19.95 a bottle.
