THE CRAB SHACK
SandDancer Beach Bar, South Shields
THEY say that mums always know best. So when mine recommended the The Crab Shack kitchen, in the SandDancer Beach Bar, for a spot of lunch, I wasn't going to disagree.
The bar/restaurant is a lovely little gem nestled on the coast in South Shields.
It has beautiful views of the beach and a nice decking area outside where you can unwind when the weather's good.
But as the heavens had opened on us, mum and I picked a cosy area by the window to settle down.
Although the pub has a maritime theme, it's not your usual anchor and safety ring decor.
The tall wooden chairs, made to look like pieces of driftwood, combined with purple downlighters behind the bar, create a more stylish and sophisticated look.
There's a plethora of dishes to choose from on the Italian menu, and the pub also does a lunchtime offer from noon till 6.30pm which includes two courses and a glass of wine for just 6.95.
While mum opted for the soup of the day: broccoli and Stilton, I went for the garlic mushrooms.
Having tried the dish in other restaurants before, and usually being served mushrooms coated in breadcrumbs, I was pleasantly surprised with what the waitress put before me: sliced mushrooms on a bedding of toasted bread, dressed in a creamy garlic sauce.
It was delicious, just the right amount of garlic and not too much on the plate for a starter.
Although the offer only includes a select number of dishes, all looked very tasty, and mum and I both decided on the chicken sizzler for our main: Portuguese chicken marinated in piri piri sauce served with pan fried potatoes, spring onions and chilli.
The meal was presented on a wood and cast iron sizzling plate, and the flavours were fantastic.
The chicken was tender and succulent and the piri piri marinade added spice.
The pub/restaurant also have other great offers such as its steak nights wher two dine for 17.95.
This includes two 10oz rump or sirloin steaks, a glass of wine each or a starter, onion rings, mushrooms and grilled tomatoes and a choice of sauce.
Drinks prices range from 3 for a pint of larger, 3.05 for cider and 3 for a small glass of wine.
