The Brittania, Cleadon village

A meal from the Britannia Inn is like a little slice of heaven on a plate.

The popular pub, in Front Street, Cleadon Village, is home to the Toby Carvery brand, offering Sunday lunch every day of the week – a brilliant concept.

There's nothing quite like the feeling you get from tucking into a tender cut of roast beef or turkey that's served with all the trimmings and smeared in thick gravy.

The hearty dish always brings a smile to my face.

Usually I head off to my parents' house for Sunday lunch. If it's mama Spottiswood's turn to cook you can always guarantee a tasty treat, but papa Spottiswood always manages to burn the Yorkshire puddings – although his dumplings are on top form.

But a phone call on Saturday to inform me mum was at work and dad at the Sunderland game left me scratching my head for where to go for my weekly feast.

Wanting to try somewhere new, the boyfriend and I settled on The Britannia.

From the moment we walked through the door the smell of roasted joints and fresh vegetables filled the air and after been showed to our seats we headed straight for the carvery.

Pork, beef, turkey and gammon were the order of the day and you can choose all four, if you wish. I opted for the turkey, and my partner the same, with a little beef.

Much to my excitement, the counter was filled with seasonal vegetables and there was everything, from parsnips, roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese, to complement the meat.

I piled my plate high and even managed to squeeze a few stuffing balls on to the side before trying to make it back to the table without spilling a drop.

The carvery is priced at 8.90 on a Sunday, and from 5.25 Monday-Saturday until 7pm (where three roasts are available to choose from).

There are also carvery alternatives and the pub food menu has dishes such as lemon and pepper chicken salad, or a fish of the day.

Extra dishes are provided each evening, such as winter warmers night every Tuesday or curry night on a Wednesday and Thursday. (7.50 after 7pm).

If you're feeling peckish, starters and puddings are available and you can opt for a two-course carvery, where you will receive 1 off your choice of starter or dessert.

Children's menus are available too and there's a huge range of refreshing alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

A pint of Fosters is 2.30, Stella 2.80 and Carling 2.35. A pint of Black Sheep costs 2.35.

If your tipple is cider, a pint of Strongbow costs 2.70 and a pint of Bulmers 2.90. Wine is also sold on draft and a litre is just 9.50. A selection of bottles are also available.

The pub also has an offer whereby for 2.09 you can have an unlimited amount of Pepsi or lemonade.

The Britannia Inn is a real traditional bar, with a welcoming atmosphere and all the staff are friendly and professional.

The place is a clear winner in my eyes and I'll definitely be back. Mum, dad, your Sunday lunches have been demoted.
