The Alexandra set to host Grinning Idiot comedy club
Comedy fans across Wearside are to be transformed into "grinning idiots" with the launch of a new comedy night at the Alexandra, Grangetown, pictured right.
The recently-refurbished venue on Queen Alexandra Road will be playing host to the Grinning Idiot Comedy Club, one of the North East's most popular comedy showcases, on Friday, February 12.
Cheers to a new era for Sunderland's "Alex".
The show will be headlined by Viz creator Simon Donald, who recently completed a run of sold-out shows at Newcastle's Tyne Theatre and will be performing as his market research character Barry Twyford.
Other comedians set to perform at the launch include London Comedy Store regular Dave Hadingham, local newcomer Kai Humphries and MC Dan Willis.
This will be the Grinning Idiot Comedy Club's first event in Sunderland, following a run of successful shows across Tyneside.
If the launch night proves successful, plans are in the pipeline for the Alexandra to host the club on a more regular basis.
It is hoped the club can attract well-known and emerging performers from television shows such as Michael McIntyre's Comedy Road Show, Live at the Apollo and Mock the Week.
Phil Crowe, sales and marketing manager for Tavistock, which owns the Alexandra, said: "The Grinning Idiot Comedy Club is renowned for spotting talent and offering comedy fans the chance to see top acts perform live before they hit the big time."
John Smith of the Grinning Idiot Comedy Club added: "Sunderland is the biggest city in the UK without a dedicated comedy club.
"We hope bringing The Grinning Idiot to Sunderland will give people the chance to prove the doubters wrong "
Tickets for the launch of the Grinning Idiot Comedy Club at the Alexandra tomorrow are priced at 10 advance, or 12 on the door and are available from The Alexandra or Grinning Idiot website, www.thegrinningidiot.com
Doors open at 7.30pm with the show scheduled to start at 8.30pm
