A CINEMA enthusiast is hoping to become “top of the popcorns”.

Matthew Rowell, 21, has made it through to the final of a national competition to create a new popcorn flavour, which will be sold at Empire cinemas across the country.

The call centre worker from East Boldon is number three in the contest with his mallowcorn flavour.

“Me and my girlfriend go to the cinema at least once a week and we usually always get some sweets to go with our popcorn,” he said.

“We’d put a bag of marshmallows in the carton, because it was a fresh batch and was still hot.

“It made the marshmallows melt around the popcorn and it tasted great.”

Other flavours in the final include banoffee pie, Sunday roast, wasabi, fish and chips and margarita flavours. If he emerges triumphant, Matthew will win a year’s supply of popcorn and cinema tickets. His flavour will then be created and sold for a limited period across Empire Cinemas.
