VICTORIOUS Sunderland boss Gus Poyet went Italian for his pre-derby meal, just hours before Sunderland beat Newcastle 2-1.
The Uruguayan head coach and his assistant Mauricio Taricco chowed down at Roma Italian Restaurant, in Mary Street, much to the delight of owner Mehmet Ergen.
“He’s been in twice now because he came in the week before the game too,” said Mehmet, 35.
“He came in with his family that time and was very nice to talk to. We had a good chat. All of the customers were wishing him good luck for the game, and obviously it worked.”
Mehmet and members of his staff also managed to get some snaps with Poyet.
“I didn’t go to the game, but I watched it on telly and it was amazing,” added Mehmet, who has run the city restaurant for three years.
