FOOTBALLERS tackled a steep task as they visited one of Wearside’s icons during a day of challenges.

Forty three year 8 and 9 students from Biddick School in Washington ran up to Penshaw Monument and back as just one of their physical feats during a day-long fund-raiser.

The Santathon also featured a performance of a dance to Jingle Bells in front of their school, trampolining and a walk, with an estimated £1,000 collected from the event.

The cash will go towards the cost of a trip to Valencia in Spain at the end of February, when the students will meet members of the city’s football team and coaches.

They will also see the side play in a derby match against Levante at the Mestalla stadium.

The students are part of the school’s football development programme, which works with talented and gifted pupils to make the most of their potential.

PE teacher Marc Wilson said: “The day was brilliant and there were people at the bottom of Penshaw Monument who stopped to take photos of us and lots of people were talking about it at school.”
