A TEENAGER was raped during a horrific late night attack.
The 18-year-old has been left traumatised after the incident.
She has been questioned by specialist officers and an investigation into the incident is now under way.
It is understood the victim had been with her attacker in a car when the assault took place, close to Penshaw Monument, early on Saturday morning.
Detective say inquiries into the attack are at an early stage but they have confirmed that a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape over the weekend.
He has been questioned and released on bail.
The incident shocked people out walking at Penshaw Hill and visiting nearby Herrington Country Park yesterday.
One man said: “It’s such a beautiful place to be today you wouldn’t think something like that could happen here, though I suppose at night when it’s dark it doesn’t seem as nice.”
Yvonne Harvey, 60, visiting Herrington from Gosforth in Newcastle, said: “It’s awful to think something like this could happen here, especially when it’s such a lovely and well-known spot.
“There haven’t been any police around here, but I feel quite safe walking around in the daytime, I often come up here because the views are so nice.”
