A SCHOOLBOY suffered head injuries in an accident on a busy road.

The 14-year-old was hit by a Vauxhall Astra, as he was crossing Hylton Road outside the Echo offices at Pennywell Industrial Estate.

Passers-by held up traffic and kept the teenager calm, while paramedics made their way to the scene.

The boy was bleeding and shouting in pain, as he was put into an ambulance and taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed the youngster was part of a group trip on a minibus, which stopped off for refreshments.

The female driver of the Astra was visibly distressed at the incident.

Kelly Lee, 33, of Pennywell, who was outside the Echo cafe at the time and saw the boy get hurt.

“He hit his head off the car windscreen,” she said.

“I have a son the same age as him. It’s scary.”

The incident happened yesterday morning.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Police received reports at 10.25am of a collision on Pennywell Industrial Estate.

“A 14-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with head injuries.

“His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

The section of the road was closed off for about 40 minutes, with motorists diverted to Chester Road.
