Staff at a Wearside surgery have received huge praise for going “well beyond the call of duty”.

The team at the Woodlands practice in Rickleton Village, Washington, have plenty of reasons to smile.

We always try to put patients first. It is pleasing that they have highlighted the staff who have done that for us and who have gone above and beyond the call of duty

They’ve made a big impression on patients who have put them in the running for a Sunderland Echo Health award.

And in a second boost, medical receptionists April Purvis and Susan Johnson have also received their own separate nomination.

General manager Paul Weddle was delighted at the double news and said: “We always try to put patients first. It is pleasing that they have highlighted the staff who have done that for us and who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.”

The practice is part of the Middle Chare medical group, which also has surgeries at Chester-le-Street, Pelton Fell and Pelton and which has 12,500 patients, including 3,500 in Washington.

The nomination for Woodlands said: “The receptionists and nurses are always pleasant, kind, courteous and very helpful towards all patients. They go out of their way to assist patients with arranging appointments, and I have personally observed them several times taking patients who have received distressing diagnoses into a private area and consoling them.”

April and Susan were praised for “providing exemplary service in an always pleasant and empathetic manner”.

The awards are well under way and the deadline for nominations is March 31

The very best will make it to our grand finals at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on April 14.
