SUPERMARKETS are making a clean sweep of changes to the Sunderland skyline.
As reported in the Echo, work is under way on the Tesco store being built at Sunderland Retail Park, in Roker.
Seemingly racing to be first to finish is another new supermarket going up in North Hylton.
A Sainsbury’s is being built on the site of the Jennings Ford dealership in Riverside Road.
Small traders and some residents in the area feared it will devastate community shops, but the development team has stressed it wishes to complement, not obliterate, existing businesses.
The 60,000 sq ft store is expected to create 450 jobs and offer Sainsbury’s full range of goods, including homeware and TU Clothing.
