STUDENTS are joining forces to organise a memorial night after a friend hanged himself.
The death of Ainsley Jack Charles, 21, at a flat he shared in Ashbrooke, sent shockwaves through his friends at Sunderland University.
Since his death in January last year, students have thrown themselves into fund-raising for charity in his name.
The latest event, Label, will take place upstairs in Gatsby tonight, and will help to plough money into Sunderland Sports Fund.
Grant Edmundson is one of the events management students who have teamed up to stage the house, tech and electro music night.
“I was on the rugby team with Ainsley, and he was one of the biggest characters on the team. He was a great person to know,” said the second-year student. Since then, we’ve hosted a number of events to raise money for charity. We chose this one because Ainsley was such a keen sportsman.”
Fellow event management student Shanice Robertson, 20, said: “House music is really popular at the minute, so we’re hoping this event can raise as much money as possible for the Sunderland Sports Fund.
“It’s a great charity which provides financial aid for the city’s talented young sports people and disabled sports people of all ages so they can attend competitions and use equipment.”
A memorial sports tournament will also take place on May 15.
l Label will have music from DJ Danny Kyle & DJ Craig Ridley.
Tickets are £2 in advance or £3 on the door. Doors open at 8pm.
