PICKETS were outside tax offices across Wearside yesterday, as staff protested against moves to introduce outside workers.
Members of the PCS union were outside Gilbridge House and Shackleton House, in Sunderland city centre, and Waterside House at Sunderland Enterprise Park.
It was part of a campaign against HM Revenue and Custom’s decision to bring in agency staff to handle inquiries.
“This was a protest against the introduction of private sector workers within the call centres in HMRC,” said union branch secretary Michael Dellow.
“They have now got 120 private sector workers in those offices.
“We don’t know why they can’t adequately staff the department themselves, instead of having to pay another company to ferry workers in.
“We had a good turnout, around 80 per cent from Waterside House and 70 per cent from the other two offices.”
