SUNDERLAND’S bid to host the historic Tall Ships race – and bring up to a million visitors to the city – has now been formally submitted.
The Echo reported last month how civic leaders are hoping to bring the event to Wearside for the first time in 2018.
Sail Training International, which organises the event, is looking for a North Sea port to be part of the race in four years’ time, and Sunderland’s Music, Arts and Culture (Mac) Trust and Sunderland City Council have joined forces to convince it to choose the mouth of the Wear.
John Mowbray, of Mac Trust, said: “It’s a very good bid and I’m feeling confident about it.
“The legacy that hosting the Tall Ships would create would be huge. It would open up the river again and help link the seafront and city centre.”
