A SUNDERLAND swingers club which was due to re-open this week after closing because of fire safety worries will now remain shut until further notice.

The Echo reported on Monday that Vivente, in Hudson Road, Hendon, had closed because of concerns from chiefs at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

A note on Vivente’s website said the venue would be closed until this Friday.

However, a statement on the site now reads: “Due to building works Vivente will be closed until further notice.

“We apologise for this interruption while we improve your club.

“As you may have read in the local press, the club will be closed for a short time while we implement some changes and improvements.

“Please check back regularly for updates.

“Rest assured that we will keep this disruption to a minimum and will re-open again very soon.”

“Swinging” is the term used for those who swap sexual partners.

When open, Vivente operates on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays according to its website.

Hendon councillor Barbara McClennan said that although she has been against the running of the club, with it being near a church and a primary school, she was happy to hear that bosses are addressing any safety issues.
