Students are cooking up a storm at their commercial restaurant.

Though it’s based at Sunderland College’s Hylton Campus, The Lounge is open to members of the public, and has been winning rave reviews.

So much so, it’s been awarded TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for the second-year running.

This award is based on reviews by TripAdvisor customers and is handed to organisations which regularly achieve positive ratings.

As well as retaining its Certificate of Excellence, the Lounge Bistro and Bar is in the top 10 restaurants and top 10 places to eat in Sunderland. Kathryn Shepherd, restaurant co-ordinator, said: “We are delighted to be awarded TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for the second year in a row.

“This award recognises the high-quality food and customer service delivered at the Lounge Bistro and Bar which we pride ourselves on, and we would like to thank everyone who has given the restaurant such fantastic reviews.”

The Lounge Bistro and Bar is a training restaurant for catering students and gives them the chance to gain experience and develop their skills in a real work setting.

Head chef Darren Grey is supported by the catering students to create dishes for customers, using fresh, locally-sourced and seasonal produce.
