“THE response has been incredible!”
Sunderland dentist Michael Oliver has been bowled over by the generosity of Echo readers, who have donated hundreds of old SAFC shirts to our Strip Off For Smiles campaign.
Michael, who owns Olivers Dental Studio, is now gearing up to take the shirts over to the El Jebah region of Morocco where he will hand them out to village children.
He leaves on Saturday, which means readers have just a few more days to donate their old SAFC football strips.
Michael said: “I can’t believe how generous everyone has been.
“I’m extremely grateful to the people of Sunderland.
“We want to take as many as we can because the children enjoy them so much.
“They’re really starting to have a connection with Sunderland.”
For the past three years, Michael has been travelling to Morocco with his charity, the Dental Mavericks, to help children suffering from abscessed or rotting teeth.
Because the Moroccan diet is high in sugar and there are no trained dentists or pain relief, the people normally suffer in silence.
Michael said: “Taking the shirts with us really helps to make us part of the community.
“In past years the children have come running out to queue for a shirt, and it’s a nice gift which helps them trust us while we take care of their teeth.”
Wednesday is the last day to donate SAFC shirts at the Echo House reception, in Pennywell.
