The right-hand lane of the one-way system in Roker Avenue, Monkwearmouth, was closed opposite the entrance to Roker Retail Park.

Cars were being diverted along Fulwell Road, leading to traffic jams, and a large section of the pavement outside a former tattoo studio was taped off.

Paul Campbell, a salesman at Frank’s Factory Flooring, which is immediately adjacent to stricken building, said police first arrived at the scene at 1.30pm.

“There is just a big, big crack all the way down the gable end of the building,” Paul told the Echo.

“They have cordoned off the street in case the roof comes off. They have closed one lane nearest to the building and have moved cars away from it in case something falls.

“They have been there quite a while and they are obviously putting traffic measures in place as a precaution.”
