A STREET festival is set to be held this weekend in memory of Nelson Mandela.
The former South African president died last week aged 95, and will be buried on Sunday.
Connie Chauke, originally from South Africa but now living on Wearside, has organised a traditional street celebration on Saturday, featuring singing and dancing.
The event will take place in Sunderland’s Market Square between noon and 2pm.
Connie said: “Many of us won’t get a the chance to go to South Africa, so we are holding this service in Sunderland to be part of what is going in on.”
Mandela’s flag-draped casket made a solemn journey through the streets of Pretoria yesterday arriving at the seat of South Africa’s government where he will lie in state for three days ahead of burial on Sunday.
