THE stunned co-ordinator of a group of street angels has told of his delight after the group was entered for an award.

Colin Fozzard, the co-ordinator of the Sunderland Street Pastors which comes to the aid of Wearside’s revellers, spoke out after the organisation was entered for the Safer Community section of the best of Wearside awards.

And as well as telling of his delight at the nomination, Colin told how the group was continuing to do good work in its fourth year of operation.

He said: “It is quite humbling to think there are people out there who recognise and appreciate the work that we do and are willing to nominate us for an award.”

Sunderland Street Pastors are out on the city centre streets every Friday and Saturday night.

Their role is to listen, to help and to care for the people of the city.

The group was first formed in July 2010 and now has 28 volunteers who are all people who have church connections.

Colin added: “We are a church-based charity and we are just trying to get the love of god on to the streets of the city. The fact that people have seen and liked what we do is an added bonus.”

The group would love to hear from more people who would like to be volunteers. People are welcome to join as long as they meet the criteria of being Christians and have the approval of the church they are linked to.
