A RETAILER’S staff and customers helped raise almost £700,000 for the NSPCC in less than a year.

Matalan stores in Sunderland and Washington raised a combined amount of £2,622 towards the total.

Janet Richardson, corporate fund-raising manager at the NSPCC in the North East, said: “This is the biggest amount Matalan has raised for us in less than a year and their contribution to the NSPCC is phenomenal.

“Despite the difficult economic climate, their staff and customers have continued to give what they can to ensure the most vulnerable children in communities across the country can access help from the NSPCC, including through our ChildLine service.

“It will make a massive difference to the lives of children in Sunderland and across the UK.”
