Big names in Sunderland are getting behind a campaign to get the city trending on Twitter.

Today at 5pm, organisers of a project are calling upon the people of Sunderland to take to social media to share their pride and passion for the city across the internet.

Organisers are hoping that Sunderland will be in the eye of a social media storm as people who live and work in the city and those who know and love it, share images, memories and stories of why they love it using #wearhere in their posts.

Bread and Coronation Street star Melanie Hill is getting behind the campaign.

She said: “I love Seaburn and its glorious yellow crunchy sand. I love the cat and dogs steps and the Cat n Dogs cafe . I never miss my crispy bacon and egg sarnie and cup of tea. I love the people of Sunderland and I love my football team the beautiful Black Cats.”

Alan Hinkes, the first Briton to climb all 14 of the world’s mountains over 8000m, is also backing the campaign.

He said: “I think what Sunderland has is something quite unique, it’s not often you get the city experience right next to a beach, and it’s always a lot sunnier than the Lake District.

“I have a lot of friends here so it’s a great excuse for me to visit and see all the city has to offer.”

To be part of the #WearHere event, share what you love about Sunderland using the hashtag.
