IT’S ready, steady, go to the Olympic Stadium for one lucky Sunderland student.

Runner Phil Hurst, who is studying sport and exercise at Sunderland University, has been invited to take part in the official test event at the new stadium in London, the BUCS Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships.

He was given the opportunity after winning the 3,000m event at the Indoor Championships in Sheffield and the 21-year-old will now have the chance to set a stadium record ahead of this summer’s games.

Phil will be tackling a shorter distance this time around, running in the 800m event but he says this is the perfect year to try something new.

He said: “Long distance is normally my thing but I want to try and improve my speed.

“This should help me progress through the year solidly with a good eye on the 1,500m Olympic trials in the middle of June.

“I’m ready to face the top boys this year and will be confident enough to give them a run for their money.

“What better place to find out what I can do than the Olympic Stadium?”
