A SUNDERLAND youngster stamped his creative mark on an annual event

James McGonnell was one of the runners-up in the North East heat of the Royal Mail’s Young Letter Writer competition.

The 10-year-old, a pupil at New Silksworth Junior School, won £50 in postal orders and a set of Royal Mail stamps and stationery.

The competition, now in its 36th year, aims to recognise the nation’s best young writers and encourage children to be creative through letter writing.

In the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics, children were asked to write about what the games means to them.
