A SCHOOLBOY has been killed after being hit by a bus on a busy Sunderland road

The 12-year-old was left fatally injured after the incident in Ryhope Street South at 3.30pm today.

Police were called after receiving a report that the boy had been struck by a bus close to Asda. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin are being informed.

Emergency services sealed off a large section of the road as investigations got underway.

The boy was making his way home from school.

Motorists are advised there may be congestion in the area.

Chief Inspector George Maratty said: “This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who died.

“Specialist officers are carrying out enquiries to establish exactly what has happened and specially trained officers are supporting the family of the boy.

“I would ask anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible.”

Diversions are in place while the investigation continues but they are causing minimal inconvenience and impact on local businesses.

There are local community officers on patrol in the area to provide reassurance and speak with local residents.

Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 699 22/11/13.
