NIALL’S Mile may be missing Niall, bit it’s still aiming to raise life-changing funds for charity.
During his time at SAFC, former chairman and Foundation of Light trustee Niall Quinn inspired the annual walking event, which helps to pay for community work carried out by the charity.
It’s returning next month across Sunderland schools.
Children will be encouraged to pledge £1 to the Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC, for taking part in the events at their school and will receive a Niall’s Mile bag on completion of their event.
Now in their fifth year, the walks are being organised by the charity in partnership with Sunderland City Council.
Lesley Spuhler, chief executive of the Foundation of Light, said: “I would like to thank Sunderland City Council for their continued support of this event, which helps keep sport and active lifestyles firmly on the agenda for schools.”
Nonnie Crawford, director of public health, Sunderland City Council added: “We are very pleased to be able to support Niall’s Mile, which promotes the Change4Life Campaign messages encouraging people to eat well, move more and live longer. Making small lifestyle changes will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of the people of Sunderland.
“Walking just one mile regularly is just one small change that many people across Sunderland can make, and the Niall’s Mile campaign is a great way to highlight this.”
Financially and structurally independent of the football club, the Foundation relies on fund-raising for 90 per cent of project costs.
