THE biggest-selling album in Britain in 2012 belongs to a Mackem.

Though chart-topper Emeli Sandé often speaks of her Scottish roots, it’s a little-known fact that she was born in Sunderland.

The soulful singer has been an almost permanent fixture in last year’s charts and has made a number of high-profile appearances including performing at both the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies of London’s 2012 Olympics.

To cap off a successful year, it’s been announced that her debut album, Our Version Of Events, was the biggest seller of the year in the UK with 1.4 million copies sold in 2012, according to figures from the Official Charts Company.

The 25-year-old’s mum Diane Sandé moved to Sunderland in 1984 to go to university where she met her husband Joel. Emeli was born in Sunderland but grew up in Aberdeenshire, where her parents still live, after they moved there when she was four.

Speaking about her daughter’s success, Diane said: “It’s all good, a bit like a rollercoaster with mainly ups. We have been going to her concerts for years helping out so we have seen it gradually build up. But this past year things have really taken off.”

Diane described her daughter performing at the Olympics ceremonies as a “huge honour.”

She said: “It was very surreal and as a mum you always worry that something is going to go wrong and I don’t think we drew breath.”

Emeli, who was born Adele Emeli Sandé, released her first solo single Heaven in August 2011. She has three number-one singles across the United Kingdom and Ireland with Read All About It with Professor Green; Next to Me and Beneath Your Beautiful, a collaboration with Labrinth. Her album peaked at number one in the UK, soon after its release in February 2012.

Tony Wadsworth, chairman of trade body the British Phonographic Industry, said: “British artists continue to resonate strongly with music fans in their home territory, with albums by Emeli Sandé, Adele and Ed Sheeran topping the end-of-year charts.

“The domestic success of albums from Mumford & Sons and One Direction has been replicated abroad - both British acts have achieved massive success in the US.”
