Today is the last chance to stake your claim to a place in Sunderland’s famous Boxing Day Dip.

Sunderland Lions Club organises the dip each year and places are available through the club website.

For administration and insurance purposes, we can’t just have people turning up on the day, so it’s vitally important that people register in advance.

However, registration closes today and organisers are reminding anyone who has left it late to log on before the deadline expires.

“We have 1,012 people registered for the dip, so far, which is a magnificent response,” said Lions spokeswoman Anne Fielding.

“But I’m sure there are still a few people out there who have been meaning to register and just haven’t got round to it. For administration and insurance purposes, we can’t just have people turning up on the day, so it’s vitally important that people register in advance.”

This year’s dip will be the 41st at Seaburn, and will once again raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Every year hundreds of people brave the icy waters off Seaburn to raise cash for a huge range of good causes, while many more line the shore and promenade to cheer them on.

Participants can raise money for any good cause they choose, with the Lions taking a 20% share for organising the event, which the club then puts towards its own charitable work.

“Last year we had 702 dippers, while some 79 charities and organisations were nominated,” said Anne.

“The amount raised was £52,402 and the beach collection raised £1,306.

“This really is a very worthwhile event and should be well supported.”
