VICTORIOUS members of a city running club are preparing to visit the Emerald Isle.
Sunderland Strollers were the winners of the 2014 Sunderland City Club Challenge at last month’s festival of running on Wearside.
Six runners from the Strollers triumphed and have been rewarded with £500 and four places for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon on Monday, August 4, thanks to event sponsor Holiday Discount Centre.
The Club Challenge involved both the Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10k run.
To qualify, a club had to have a minimum of three representitives in both events, with at least one runner of each gender in each race.
The Strollers team included England Commonwealth Games hopeful Aly Dixon, as well as Michael Edwards, Michael Laws, Steven Rankin, Andy Powell and Gillian Ritchie.
The group recorded the lowest cumulative time from their best three performances in both races, with a combined total of 5hrs 53mins and 15secs.
Close behind in second place was Sunderland Harriers in 5hrs 59mins 33secs, winning £200, followed by Tyne Bridge Harriers, who scooped £100 after recording a time of 6hrs 20mins 38secs.
Holiday Discount Centre managing director and keen runner Steve Campion, who presented the Strollers with their prizes, said: “A number of our team took part in the Sunderland 10k and had a tiring but great day. We were really happy to donate the Dublin prize and we hope the Sunderland Strollers all enjoy the run on the day.”
