A DRIVER and his passenger were hurt after their car smashed into a bus shelter.

The collision happened at 5.20pm on Silksworth Lane, Sunderland, close to the Sainsbury’s store.

Police shut the road after a white Hynundai, driven by a 30-year-old, caused the bus stop’s structure to bend and its glass panel to shatter.

The motorist and his passenger were left with minor injuries, but did not need hospital treatment.

The road reopened just before 7pm once the vehicle was recovered and debris cleared.
