Sunderland pubs make it into real ale A-list

TWO Wearside pubs are tantalising the tastebuds with their real ales after making it onto the pages of a national beer guide.

The William Jameson, in Fawcett Street, and The Sir William de Wessyngton have been listed in Camra’s (Campaign for Real Ale) Good Beer Guide 2013.

Local branch members of Camra chose both of the pubs after regular visits to check on the quality of the real ales offered up to punters.

They also took into account customer service, decor and overall atmosphere.

A Camra spokesman said: “The William Jameson and The Sir William de Wessyngton deserve their places in the Good Beer Guide 2013.

“It is our belief that if a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub, including customer service, quality of food and atmosphere, are likely to be of an equally-high standard.”

The William Jameson’s manager Wayne Davis welcomed the news.

He said: “I am delighted that The William Jameson has been recognised for the quality of its real ales by Camra members.

“We offer our customers an excellent range of real ales at all times, including those from regional brewers and microbrewers, as well as hosting our own beer festivals.

“Staff at the pub work hard to ensure that the real ales on offer are kept in first-class condition at all times and the pub’s inclusion in the guide highlights this.”

Sarah Noble, pub manager at The Sir William de Wessyngton, in Victoria Road, said the pub was delighted with the news they had made it into the Good Beer Guide.

Camra is a voluntary organisation that was formed in March 1971 by four men from the North West with a passion for proper beer and real ale and disillusioned by the domination of the UK beer market by a handful of companies.

The group’s core aims are to promote real ales and top pubs.
