Sunderland primary looks forward with support from academy trust

New Silksworth Infant School was placed in special measures a year ago after being rated as inadequate in all areas.

Following a huge shake up of management Ofsted inspectors, who recently revisited the school, have now said it is taking effective action towards the removal of special measures and the action plan is fit for purpose.

The report said: “Leaders have worked intensively to provide a more stable teaching team.

“The passion and determination of governors has continued unabated.”

Safeguarding is given a high priority and attendance has improved, said inspectors.

Coun Phil Tye, chairman of governors at the Blind Lane school, said proposals are now well underway for the school to become an academy by joining the Extol Trust at Eldon Grove Academy in Hartlepool.

He said Silksworth Junior School, which is situated just next door, is also looking to join the Extol Trust and a possible amalgamation of the two Sunderland schools.

The councillor said: “It seems sensible to create one school, we are seperated by a curtain in the hall.

“I think it would be welcomed by our parents.”

The junior school is currently carrying out consultation with parents.

Sarah Nordstrom, the interim headteacher at New Silksworth Infants, said she welcomed the latest Ofsted report which shows they are moving in the right direction.

She said: “We are still in special measures and we recognise there is still a long way to go.”
