A woman who set up a record-breaking charity run is in the running herself - for an Echo award.
Claire Douglas was the founder of the inaugural 5k Sunderland Poppy Run which was held at Silksworth Sports Complex last year.
Nearly 300 took part in aid of the Royal British Legion and this year, Claire is bidding to get double that number.
Now, she has been nominated in the fundraiser category of the Best of Wearside Awards. She said: “It is unbelievable and very nice news.”
The idea of Silksworth woman Claire, 40, whose niece Jade Outhwaite is serving in the Army, was that the run will now become an annual event in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday commemorations.
This year’s run has the new name of The Peoples Run 2 Remember and Claire said: “We are only three weeks into registration and 150 people have signed up already. I am hoping to get 500 to 600.”
The nomination for Claire said: “This event is the only event in the North East to accommodate for all ages and abilities and Claire prides herself on veterans being able to participate in an with their children and families.
“Claire spends months preparing for the event and last year was well known for having the best goody bag due to Claire contacting numerous companies to donate.”
Claire becomes one of the early entries in this year’s awards and we want more. From now until the deadline of Monday, November 2, we will be looking for the very best in areas such as student of the year, sporting excellence, fundraiser of the year and green champion.
We also want to find a green champion, volunteer of the year, sports team of the year and lifetime achievement.
This year, the competition is being held in association with Vantec Europe Ltd.
We have also been backed by some fantastic category sponsors. They are Calsonic, Gentoo, Martinos, TWR and UK Asbestos and we thank them all for their fantastic backing.
