WEARSIDERS with a passion for politics are being challenged to get involved with an MP’s work placement scheme.

Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Sunderland West, is inviting people to apply for the chance to work in Parliament.

Successful applicants to The Speaker’s Parliamentary Placement Scheme will spend four days a week working at the Commons for the office of an MP.

The scheme aims to open up opportunities for those living outside London by paying all interns a fixed wage, unlike many other placement where they work for free.

Mrs Hodgson said: “Getting a foot on the ladder of many careers, such as politics and in the media, is incredibly difficult, especially if you don’t live in London or can’t afford to work unpaid for months on end.

“This inevitably means that lots of places like Parliament are full of the same kinds of people.

“This scheme is therefore very welcome and I hope that people across Sunderland who are passionate about politics will consider applying.”
