SUNDERLAND Minster has been given a new lick of paint by a group of young volunteers.

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme, run along with the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, set its group of young people the task of sprucing up the church’s exterior.

Sharon Smith, from the fire service, said: “The fire service has been running the Prince’s Trust Team Programme for about 11 years.

“The main ethos of the scheme is to try and get young people to turn their lives around and hopefully help them into employment.

“I think it is a fantastic opportunity and I believe wholeheartedly in it.

“The guys will spend the next two weeks working on the Minster by painting the railings and then continue with the rest of the programme.

“What is particularly good is that many of them leave with a real sense of direction and achievement.”
