DELICIOUS discounts are on the menu for foodies as customers are lured to sample cut-price city cuisine.

Restaurants, cafes and bars across the city have signed up to Restaurant Wednesdays as part of Sunderland Live’s Summer In The City.

Vouchers available from the events company website will dish up mid-week diners discounts every Wednesday throughout this month.

Organisers hope the scheme, along with other Sunderland Live events across the summer, will “build upon the feel good factor in the city during this summer’s series of high profile concerts at the Stadium of Light.”

Representatives of the 15 venues taking part met at D’Acqua in Sunniside yesterday to launch the deals. Chris Alexander, chief operating officer of Sunderland Live, said: “Our city has so much to offer for residents and visitors alike, and we hope Restaurant Wednesday will encourage more people to come out and enjoy some mid-week fine dining and entertainment.”

Manager of D’Acqua, Jimmy Shadforth added: “We are all delighted to support Summer in the City which is a great idea to attract even more people into our city centre to see what we have to offer.

“It gives our restaurants and cafe bars the chance to showcase their venues alongside some great entertainment, and we hope people will come out and enjoy themselves with the added encouragement of the discounts on offer.”

The scheme comes as part of a series of summer events across the city, with this month’s gigs at the Stadium of Light alone forecast to £10million windfall for the city’s bars, restaurants, shops and taxi companies.

Summer In The City will also feature live music, buskers, street entertainment and markets every Wednesday and Saturday throughout this month.

Mr Alexander added: “There is something for everyone and it’s also a chance for musicians from across the city and the region to showcase their talent.

“It will be a great way to keep visitors entertained while they shop, dine or enjoy a drink in the city centre.”
