A HOSPITAL team has been praised as “an absolute credit” to the city of Sunderland.

The 27-strong renal team, based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, handles a caseload of about 70 people a day.

“Job satisfaction for me is giving people quality of life and helping them to lead the life that they want to lead.”

And some of those grateful patients took time to put the team in the running for this year’s Sunderland Echo Best of Health awards.

One nomination praised the staff as “devoted, conscientious and caring”.

It applauded their huge level of expertise as well as the team’s willingness to go the extra mile to ensure top-class care for patients.

The renal team was also praised for “displaying an amazing sense of humour and professionalism. This team are a credit to Sunderland Royal Hospital.” Today, unit manager Helen Blackman said: “We are delighted. This has never happened to us before. It is a privilege to be nominated by our patients.”

The renal unit is an outpatient facility for patients whose kidneys have failed.

Patients will spend a minimum of 12 hours a week at the unit, often in three spells of four hours.

They will be attached to a dialysis machine with an artificial kidney and cleans out the fluids that a kidney would normally remove.

The three-shift system sees patients arrive for morning, afternoon or twilight sessions.

Manager Helen has worked in healthcare for more than 30 years.

Job satisfaction for her, she says, is “giving people quality of life and helping them to lead the life that they want to lead.”

The Best of Health awards have already had some impressive entries but we want even more. So whether it’s your favourite GP, an outstanding nurse or a popular carer, there’s a category for all parts of our health profession.

All entries must be received by Friday, March 20. After that, judges will meet around a week later to narrow down the field.

And all those who make it to the shortlist will be invited to the finals at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, April 16.
